1. PL306 performs well both indoors and out. Balls usually roll a consistent speed in the 11-12 range on the Stimpmeter. The foam is designed for stability and to guard against expansion, though when hitting the ball it may also cause a “trampoline” effect, especially when executing chip shoots. For putting, the PL306 is a great product, offering consistent speed, and is ideal for teaching facilities.
2. PL307 has also been tested indoors and out, though it is more often used outside than is PL306. It is essential to use two pounds of 40-60 infill sand (available from CP). Note, however, that infilling will not alter the speed. The quality of CP's nylon (denier + faceweight) means that balls run at a consistent speed of 10 - 11 on the Stimpmeter. If the base is 97%+ compaction, which is ideal, the customer will be on the higher end of that speed (11 on the Stimpmeter). The infill is used for ballast (to force the backing to follow the slopes and undulations) and to keep the turf down, though if you use too much infill with PL307 in the hope of maximizing speed, it will stiffen the fibers (straightening them out) and cause more resistance on the ball’s roll, reducing its speed.
Summary: Installed correctly PL307 (hard base = 97%+ compaction with 2 pounds of 40 - 60 infill sand) will have very limited, if any, expansion. It is the best choice for outdoor use and has a fantastic duration record of fifteen years or more. PL306 offers ideal performance for a teaching facility when the sole use is for putting.
